Parker says lessons have to be learned from defeat at Seaton

Rob Prior - three wickets for Seaton against Barton

BARTON skipper Adam Parker said lessons must be learned from the four-wicket defeat in a low-scoring affair at Seaton.

Robbie Prior (3-25) took three wickets and there were two each for Ben Morgan and Wes Holmes as Seaton dismissed Barton for 109 in the 40th of their 45 overs.

Josh Cann played the anchorman role for Seaton and his patient 47 got them most of the way there. Joel Seward – 17 off 60 balls – also played a part. Tristan Wakeley wrapped things up with an unbeaten 14.

Parker said it was a bad toss to lose on wet day, but there was more to the outcome than the flip of a coin.

“The toss played a huge part in the game and the wicket dried up and got easier as the game went on,” said Parker.

“That being said we didn't adapt well at all and we were probably guilty of trying to bat the same as you would do on a dry wicket.

“Batting-wise, more application is needed and quickly as we cannot expect our bowlers to defend low scores week in week out.

“Bowling-wise was good. We nearly nicked the game back and dropped a couple of key chances. If we had another 10-20 runs it would have been interesting…”

Barton did well to get as many as they did as they were 29 for five and 58 for seven. Greg Shelton stuck around to make 30 and a rear guard action with Morgan Harford (13) added 41 for the eighth wicket.

Barton had bowlers to stop Seaton running away with the game. Jon Martin. Adam Parker and Harford all kept the runs down. Harford’s four-wicket haul made life a bit more difficult for Seaton.

Parker made a point of praising the volunteer ground staff at Seaton for mopping up the ground on Saturday morning.

“Credit to the groundsmen for getting the game on,” said Parker. ‘They worked hard all morning.”

Barton are away again this Saturday as they travel to A Division newcomers Cullompton.
