Abbots' skipper Watkin looks back on 'worthwhile' short season

ABBOTSKERSWELL captain Nick Watkin saw enough during the six-game season in South One to regard it as a worthwhile exercise.

Abbots were a bit too strong for Bovey Tracey 2nd XI – all out for 39 – and Barton (won 94 runs) and gave Torquay a scare before losing on the chase.

Three wins in four completed games meant Abbots were competitive, but they dropped batting and bowling points too often to get past Torquay at the top.

Watkin said player development was the top priority and on that front he was content.

“Ed Smout-Cooper (ave 47.00) scored runs on a consistent basis and Ben Cowdry took to first-team cricket exceptionally well,” said Watkin.

“I was also been really impressed with Elliott Adams and his ability to bowl consistently good spells.”

Cowdry had nine league wickets at 13.1 runs each. Adams had an economy rate of around three runs an over and an impressive bowling return of one wicket every 10 runs.

Watkin also had a word of praise for Devon League officials who worked hard to get some worthwhile cricket played.

“It was fantastic to get some cricket in and well done to all involved who facilitated us all being able to get out there and play,” said Watkin.
