Plympton and Plymouth run through options during trial games

Hal Kerton - top score for Varcoe

PLYMOUTH skipper Jon Varcoe got exactly what he wanted from a full-scale practice match at Mount Wise.

Limited league cricket in a six-game division starts this Saturday when Plymouth entertain Cornwood. Match practice is what Varcoe wanted and what the players got during 80-overs of mix-and-match action.

“The bowlers were happy to get overs under their belts and batters wanted time in the middle,” said Varcoe.

“Now we are looking forward to Cornwood this weekend.”

Hal Kerton top scored for Varcoe’s Xi with 76 in a total of 219 for nine. Ollie Parsons chipped in with 45 and Nathan Carlisle 26.

Devon batsman James Degg, newly arrived from Torquay, made 24 at the top of the order.

Ethan Carlisle (3-34) had the stand-out bowling figures.

Dan Goodey’s XI passed the winning post in the 33rd over when Carlisle hit Teddy Haffenden for four.

To give the rest of the team batting practice, Goodey’s XI stayed out there by agreement until they reached 246 for six.

Joe Hagan-Burt (45) and Rob Bennett (53) gave Goodey’s XI a 66-run start, then Alex Hill (71ret) took them the rest of the way.

Richard Goldsby-West (2-25 off six) had the best mix of economy and success among the Varcoe XI bowlers.

ELLIOT Hamilton and Jonty Walliker were Plympton A’s main run getters in a three-wicket win over Plympton B in a 40-over trial match.

The B Team batted first and with Jack Horton making 88 not out they totalled 230 for six. Next best with 28 was Alex Carr.

The A Team slumped to 16 for three in reply and needed to find a fightback fast

Hamilton and Walliker both made 75s at better than run-a-ball rate in stand of 148 for the fourth wicket that swung the match.

Sam Agnew was still there on 33 not out when the A Team romped to victory with more than 12 overs to go.
