CLYST St George stay top of the D Division East despite a four-wicket defeat by Kentisbeare, but their lead has been trimmed to four points.

Clyst opener Sam Read reeled off his third league ton of the season so far in a 37-over total of 234 for eight.

Read put on 89 with Chris Ferro (22) and 59 with Freddie Creer (31) before he was second out on 147. Three run-outs were a feature of the innings.

It’s no secret that Premier Division clubs are starting to show huge interest in Read, a graduate of the club’s and Devon’s age-group coaching cohorts.

Kents were consistent with the bat all the way through. Pick of the knocks were Scott Chappell (71), Ed Halse (55no) and Andrew Chave (28).

SANDFORD eased to a five-wicket win at Feniton, where they were always in charge after skittling the home side for 108.

Graham Tucker (39) and Mark Kingdon (30) had the only scores of note for Feniton. No one else made more than nine as Shaun Fryett (5-29) and Matt Theedom (2-15) did most of the damage.

Sandford had a little wobble when they went from 59 for one to 59 for four, Chris Blake (21) among the casualties, but Ben Clement’s 34 not out saw them home and up to fourth in the table. Feniton are fifth.

JAMES Billington and Alex Newman bowled Clyst Hydon to an 87-run win in the basement battle with bottom side Budleigh Salterton.

A 102-run stand between Ian Sutton (34) and Sinth Thevaraj (46) helped Hydon post 225 all out in the 45thand final over.

A 60-run stand between Hefin Wood (27) and Newman (36) topped up the tally.

Jack England (3-41) and Joe Marley (3-31) had the best bowling figures for Budleigh, who only got to 138 all out in reply.

Skipper Dan Messom made 38 to make the score respectable after Budleigh had slumped to 47 for six. Billington had five for 43 and Newman three for 15 to remove the tail.

HONITON warmed-up for a crack at leaders Clyst St George with an unexpected 134-run win over Chardstock.

Chardstock went into the game on the back of consecutive nine and ten-wicket wins. Honiton had lost three of their previous four games.

Honiton gave themselves a chance by rattling along to 221 for seven in 45 overs.

Opener Dave Haysom fourth out at 127 for 54, gave Honiton a solid start with Luke Phillips (28) then Adam Holmes (43) and skipper James Pickard added 64 for the fifth wicket.

Gary Larcombe spun out three for 48.

Chardstock got to 37 for two before it all went wrong. They slumped to 37 for five, recovered to 62 for six them tailed off to 87 all out.

Man of the moment for Honiton with six wickets for 29 runs was Willy Graham.

SAMPFORD Peverell & Tiverton came up short on the chase at Upottery, where they went down by exactly 50 runs.

Rob Tasker belted nine sixes and three fours on his way to a top score of 81 in Upottery’s total of 253 for six. James Mitcham (45) and Jack Larcombe (38) chipped in.

SP&T appeared to have it all to do at 121 for six with Lee Hooper (34) and Matt Summerfield (36) already in and out. Tom Hatton (56no) and Robbie Broomhead (25) kept the game alive with a 73-run stand.

Tasker, who bowled nine overs for 18 runs, gave the SP&T batters little to hit.
