Chelston & Kerswell march on at top of D Division West

Paignton

CHELSTON & Kingskerswell maintained their three-point lead over Paignton at the top of the D West table when they won by seven wickets at Plymouth CS&R.

The Villagers are going great guns at the top of the table – and winless Civil soon found out why.

Having reached 77 for two with Nick Read (34), Matt Trevorrow (18) and Dan Winsor (17) all chipping in, Civil collapsed to 99 all out.

Lucas Grierson had four wickets for 19 runs, Jake Kearney picked up three for four in nine balls and Pat Duke winkled out two more.

Civil had some success when C&K opener Chris Harrison went cheaply, but that was as good it got.

Wickets fell at 57 and 74 as Grierson (32), Nick Guest (20), Mike Etherington (24no) and Kearney (20no) knocked off the runs in 20 overs.

Civil remain bottom of the table and are already 34 points adrift of safety.

STEVE Raven and Jonty Walliker both hit half-centuries in Plympton 2nd XI’s three-wicket win over Hatherleigh 2nd XI.

Skipper Danny Forrester (67) had the only score of note in Hatherleigh’s running total of 127 for seven.

Alex Scullard (25no) and last man Hayden Sharp (27) heaved the total on to 188 for nine. Walliker (3-38), Raven (2-17) and Josiah Caunter (2-24) were the pick of the bowlers.

Plympton were in a spot of bother at 65 for five in reply with Jason Degg (32) just out. Niall Leahy (4-40) did most of the damage.

Raven (55) and Walliker (66) took Plympton most of the way home.

WHITCHURCH bounced back from their defeat by Chelston & Kingskerswell with a nine-wicket win over lowly Lewdown.

Dan Poole took four wickets for 30 runs and Josh Towl had three for 10 as Lewdown were skittled for 117. Adam Creasy (55) top scored.

Ben Powell (44no) and Rob Bone (30no) led a perfunctory run chase.

For skipper Towl it was just the response he was looking for.

“A fantastic bowling a fielding performance put us in a commanding position at the interval,” said Towl.

“Calm and collected batting from Ben Powell and Rob Bone saw us home with ease.

“It was a great display that shows real intent for the rest of the season.”

SOUTH Devon gave promotion-chasing Paignton 2ndXI a scare before conceding an eight-run defeat in a D Division West nail-biter.

Noah Wright, scorer of two league tons already this season, made 50 at the top of the order and Sam Woodcock helped himself to 56 not out as Paignton rowed along to 234 for eight in their 45 overs.

Stands of 84 between Wright and Joel Ashworth (48) and 47 between Tom Blundell (28) and Woodcock underpinned the Paignton innings.

Mike Smith opened the bowling on his South Devon comeback after a spell out of the game and bowled nine tidy overs for 30 runs.

Toby Goodman (3-38) was the pick of the South Devon bowlers.

South Devon made a wobbly start against Charlie Ward (2-36) and Jack Harman (2-22) and were an unimpressive 23 for three.

In-form opener Jonty Tupman stuck around to make 40 off 75 balls and with chip-ins from Liam Price (38), Smith (41) and Harry Senior (23) South Devon got to 184 for seven. Woodcock (2-68) took some punishment as the target came down.

Kalen Warne, who made a brisk 49, got South Devon down to the last over from Tom Blundell needing 20 to win.

It was a few too many and South Devon closed on 226 for seven. Defeat dropped South Devon down to sixth in the table. They will expect to make up lost ground when they visit winless Plymouth CS&R this Saturday.

STEVE Bowden’s run-filled start to the season continued with an unbeaten hundred in Ipplepen’s 112-run win over Kenn.

Bowden is clearly relishing his new role opening the batting in the 2ndXI as he has made two 50s and 116 not out in three trips to the crease since creeping up the order

Marcus Gadie (39), Andrew Maynard (23) and Matt Quartley, who bludgeoned 48 off 23 balls, all contributed to a total of 298 for five.

Kenn lost opener Anthony Gosling n the first over, but regrouped as Hugh Stronge (34) and James Gosling (97) put on 97 for the second wicket.

At 166 for three with Gosling batting there was a game to be won. Tapley (2-42) made the breakthrough Ipplepen needed and it was downhill all the way to 186 all out with Gadie (3-48) and Keith Wakeham (3-20) doing the damage.
