HEATHCOAT have been awarded a £30,000 grant to pay for improvements to their playing area at Knightshayes.

The Suez Communities Trust has made the which will be spent on a new irrigation system, roll-on pitch covers, new grass pitches, improvements to sight screens, a brand-new bowling machine, a roll-on practice net and a new kit storage area intended to benefit the junior section.

Suez Recycling and Recovery UK set up the Trust to distribute grants through the Landfill Communities Fund. More than 4,000 projects have shared around £110 million since the Trust was formed in 1997.

The company has a number of sites in Devon, including one at Ashley near Tiverton.

Former Heathcoat chairman John Smith, an active trustee of the club, said it was good to see money being released for community sports projects.

He added: “As a builder, I know just how incredibly expensive it is to dispose of waste.

“Government have set landfill tax at an all-time high to encourage recycling, but it is good to know cricket and other voluntary organisations in Devon continue to benefit from the tax.

“Ninety pence in every pound of tax is available for local community schemes.”

Rod Randerson, the current Heathcoat chairman, also thanked Suez and the Landfill Communities Fund for their sizeable contribution toward the club’s ongoing improvement programme.
