Ladies squad back in the saddle for fund-raising cyclethon
PLAYERS, coaches and supporters of the Devon Women and Development cricket squads are saddling up again to help raise money toward their playing costs in 2019.
A 24-hour cyclethon will take place on static bikes in the sports hall at Plymouth College, starting at noon on Friday, January 4.
A similar cyclethon took pace 12 months ago to help raise money towards a Development squad tour to South Africa.
Warren Carr, the former chairman of the Devon Women’s Cricket Association, is one of the organisers of the event.
Carr said the twin targets for the cyclethon are to cover 692km and raise at least £1,116.
“The distance is significant as that equates to the longest away journey the team made in 2018,” said Carr, who used to play for United Services and Plympton CCs.
“And, based on figures from last year, £1,166 was the average cost of a weekend away.”
Carr and members of the squad took part in a similar static bike challenge in Exeter last Christmas.
The squads have already completed several fund-raising events, including bag packing, a fantasy women’s world T20 competition and charity book sales.
This cyclethon is the latest in a series of fundraising activities aimed at reducing the cost for individual players to play in 2019. A further bag-packing day at Morrisons in Tavistock and a Golf Day at Tiverton Golf Club also planned.
