Berkshire bring in England U19 keeper for T20 semi-final clash with Devon
By Paul Bolton
BERKSHIRE have included England Under-19 wicketkeeper Jack Davies in their squad for Minor Counties T20 Finals Day at Wormsley in Buckinghamshire on Sunday (August 26).
Davies has made only one appearance for Berkshire this season – in their Minor Counties Trophy quarter-final defeat by Devon – because of his commitments with England Under-19s and Middlesex’s Second XI.
He is available for Finals Day, where Berkshire will play Devon in the second semi-final at 1pm, but he will drop out of the squad if rain forces the event into a reserve day on Bank Holiday Monday. The final is scheduled for 4pm.
Durham MCCU seamer Mungo Russell will also drop out if a reserve day is required but former England Under-19 all-rounder Euan Woods, who is on Surrey’s books, is available for both days.
Cheshire face Norfolk in the opening T20 semi-final at Wormsley on Sunday (10am) with a side unrecognisable from the one beaten by Berkshire in the Minor Counties Championship this week.
Wayne White, the former Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lancashire all-rounder, captain Rick Moore, all-rounder Simon Normanton and batsman Furqan Shafiq are the only players to make the transition from red ball to white ball cricket.
Moore takes over the captaincy from Danny Leech, Cheshire’s leader in three-day cricket. Norfolk also have captains for different formats with the experienced Chris Brown skippering in three-day cricket and all-rounder Ashley Watson in the two limited overs formats.
Watson led Norfolk in the Minor Counties Championship for the first time in this week’s defeat by Cambridgeshire at Manor Park in the absence of Brown who had coaching commitments in the ECB’s Super-4s competition for the country’s leading Under-17s.
Norfolk will be missing Rob Taylor, the former Scotland and Leicestershire all-rounder, on Sunday. Taylor has played in all eight of Norfolk’s group matches but he is unavailable this weekend because of his coaching commitments with Loughborough Lightning who are in the Kia Super League final at Hove.
All-rounder Ben Coote also misses out because of a hamstring injury which he sustained against Cambridgeshire but former Leicestershire wicketkeeper Tom New is available and 19-year-old batsman Will Rogers, who has shown promise in recent three-day matches, returns to the T20 squad.
Entrance to Minor Counties T20 Finals Day at Wormsley is £10 or £6.50 if booked in advance through Eventbrite.co.uk
MCCA members and children under 12 accompanied by an adult will be admitted free.
