Moore praised for 'phenomenal' innings of 200 not out against Worcestershire U17s

WHAT a knock! Barnstaple & Pilton cricketer Jack Moore struck an unbeaten double hundred batting for Devon U17s against Worcestershire.

Moore, playing a year ahead of his own under-16 age group, rescued Devon from a disastrous start to their three-day game at Sandford.

Devon were 29 for three when Moore went out to bat. He was still there when Devon declared at 372 for nine.

Moore, who left Pilton Community College last month and is heading for Petroc College in September, has played age-group cricket for Devon from under-10 level upwards. He had not scored a county hundred before.

Sandy Allen, the team coach and Devon’s director of youth cricket, said it was a remarkable innings.

Tom Simmons (Left) and Jack Moore (Right)“We were up against it at 17 for three when Jack went out – and 80 overs later he was still there,” said Allen.

“It was a phenomenal knock – absolutely chanceless – and showed what a mature cricketer Jack is becoming.

“Jack got himself in, waited for the bad ball to come along, and when it did he put it away.”

Moore is only the third player in 25 years of under-17s cricket to make a double ton. The other two were Dan Pyle (247 v Hampshire) and Matt Cooke (201 v Cornwall).

Moore’s stats were certainly impressive. He faced 186 balls reaching exactly 200 not out. He hit 31 fours and a six – that’s 130 in boundaries – and shared some big stands as well.

Having put on 61 with Luke Medlock (24) and 49 with Ed Middleton (19), there was a real sting in the tail for Worcestershire.

Tail-ender Tom Simmons made 56 not out in an unbroken last-wicket stand of 145!

The game, an ECB Under-17 County Championship fixture, ended in a five wicket defeat for Devon who still finished second in their division.
