LOCAL heroes Craig and Jamie Overton are to captain a side each in a charity cricket day at North Devon CC to bring down the curtain on the season.

The Devon League season ended last Saturday with a six-wicket win over Torquay that ensured North Devon avoided relegation from the Premier Division.

There’s North Devon League cricket to complete – Filleigh and Sandford on the next two Saturday afternoons – then the charity day on September 30.

Chris Rogers in full cry for AustraliaThree local companies - Chichester Developments, BJ’s Value House & Travel Chapter – are fighting it out for the North Devon Shield in a Ten-10 tournament.

Chichester Developments will be captained by Somerset and North Devon’s Craig Overton and also include Somerset’s one-day star Max Waller in their side.

Travel Chapter will be skippered by Craig’s twin Jamie, also of Somerset & North Devon fame. They will have Somerset’s Peter Trego playing for them.

Completing the line-up are BJ's All Stars, who will be captained by James Hildreth playing alongside former Australia opening batsman Chris Rogers and Somerset’s Director of Cricket Matt Maynard.

Rogers is another local hero at Instow, where he played for a couple of seasons in the late 90s as a teenager before breaking into the pro game, which included25 Tests.

“I am looking forward to playing in this tournament and catching up with old friends,” said Rogers.

“I have so many happy memories of my time in North Devon. It is a ground that still is special to me.

“I hope the day raises lots of money for my old club and the two causes involved.”

The first match will get under way at 11am, with the final taking place at around 4.30pm.

Entry will be free and there will be a bar, barbecue and teas available for spectators. Tables may also be booked in our pitch side marquee for the day’s cricket, plus a curry evening meal and question-and-answer session with the stars at £15 per person.

Money raised will be shared between the Children’s Hospice South West at Fremington and Hildreth’s testimonial season fund.

Event organiser Frank Biederman said: “This promises to be a competitive and exciting day’s cricket, as well as raising money for two good causes.

“I am excited to see Chris Rogers step on to the Instow pitch again.

“We are all so proud of what he has achieved in the game since his time with us at North Devon in the late 90's.”
