Joe Thompson - in Devon

TORQUAY’S Joe Thompson is in Devon’s three-day squad for the first time for the game against Wiltshire at Salisbury.

Thompson has consistently been among the runs for his club side this season, topping 300 in the league at an average in the high 30s despite batting below halfway much of the time.

The Devon management were impressed by Thompson in two pre-season games against Hampshire 2nd XI, and also when he made his T20 debut in the Treleavens Tournament against Cornwall and Somerset two weeks ago.

“Joe has been close to getting in the team for a while and we have a chance to do it now and keep the balance of the side right,” said team chief Keith Donohue.

If Thompson plays he will be joining younger brother Matt in the side.

Matt Thompson has been a Devon regular since 2011 and was team captain in 2015-16.

It has been a while since two brothers from Torquay featured in a Devon Minor Counties Championship side at the same time. They were the Edwards brothers – Hiley and Chris – who played against Wiltshire on their home ground in 1985.

The Wallens – Gary and Clive – appeared for Devon while both were Torquay players back in 1980.

Matt Thompson plays for St Fagins in Wales now as he works away from Devon, but Torquay is his home-town club.

Three players who featured in the win over Cheshire last time out are missing from the Wiltshire squad.

Somerset and England U19 rising star Tom Lammonby isn’t available, Bovey Tracey’s Hugo Whitlock is injured and Sidmouth’s Luke Bess has been left out.

In come Thompson, batters Alex Barrow and Jack Dart and Plymouth pacer Dan Goodey.

Barrow was released to play for Gloucestershire 2nd XI against Ireland last week while Devon were beating Cheshire.

Dart was on an extended holiday in New Zealand, watching the Lions rugby series.

Jack Popham, the North Devon opening bowler, hasn’t been considered due to a side strain.
