Devon looking at bowling options before naming side to face Wiltshire

Jack Popham - poised for a recall against Wiltshire?

DEVON'S Minor Counties Championship season resumes a week today against Wiltshire at Bemerton on July 16,17, 18.

The side won't be picked for a day or two as injury and availability issues have to be worked through.

Opening bowler Hugo Whitlock is less than 50-50 to play as he is suffering a side strain and an ankle injury. He didn't bowl after the first day against Cheshire last week.

Jack Popham, now over a pinged hamstring, will be hoping for a recall. Dan Goodey and George Benton are also in contention.

James Burke's availability isn't known a lot will depend on whether employers Surrey have games they want him to play in.

The same applies to Somerset's Tom Lammonby, who has the further complication of being in the England under-19 squad to play India over the coming weeks.

Alex Barrow, picked to play against Cheshire but released when Gloucestershire approached him for a 2nd XI game, is another player with doubtful availability.

Barrow steered Gloucestershire 2nd XI to a nine-wicket win over Ireland A in a three-day game at Rockampton.

Barrow, released by Somerset at the end of last summer, has played a handful of games for Gloucestershire 2nd XI this season in the hope of earning a new contract for 2018.

Ireland made 330 all out in their first innings, which was reduced by 40 on day one with Barrow and Miles Hammond batting through to the close.

Barrow made 43 in Gloucestershire’s first inning total of  370 for nine declared.

Two wickets each for Matt Taylor and Chris Liddle had Ireland rocking at 92 for five at the end of day two. They were al out for 252.

Chasing 213 for victory, openers Miles Hammond and Barrow took Gloucester to 87 before Simi Singh came on and bowled Hammond (46) in his first over.

Barrow went on to finish 86 not out while George Hankins brought up his 50 with a straight six before taking Gloucester to victory on 54 not out.
