Junk ton sets up Budleigh for win over Chudleigh

James Leat - in the wickets again for Budleigh Salterton

CHUDLEIGH have some work to do to get away from the A Division basement after going down by 130 runs at Budleigh Salterton.

Opener Matt Junk made 105 – 12 fours, 124 balls faced – in a sizeable Budleigh total of 288 for six.

Grant Stone opened up for Chudleigh and played a similar anchorman role for 88 off 104 balls.

Stone lacked the backing Junk had and Chudleigh were all out for 158 with nearly 10 overs to bowl.

Chudleigh aren’t in the bottom two yet, but only have a 16-point cushion between them and Brixham in the second relegation place.

Chudleigh’s last win was five rounds ago when they beat Plympton by 46 runs and another is now overdue.

Budleigh are where they have been for a while, tucked in behind top two Hatherleigh and Sandford.

Junk and Elliot Rice (37) opened up with a 95-run stand for Budleigh. Max Waller (37) and Trevor Anning (39) helped Junk get the score up to 226 for four.

Junk finally fell to Stone (2-57) but the runs kept coming with Ben Carter (38) and Phil Anning (20no) chipping in.

Mark Russell’s one for 36 off 10 was tidy bowling for Chudleigh.

Chudleigh skipper Ed Foreman didn’t make it to the second over – Waller (2-20) saw to that – and Matt Heather (20) bowed out at 53 for two to in-form James Leat (4-53).

Stne and Dan Britcliffe (18) took the tally took the Chudleigh tally to 137 for three, which with 19 overs to go is could-go-either-way territory.

Phil Anning broke the partnership by dismissing Britcliffe and from then on it was downhill all the way.

Leat and Junk (3-12) ran through the middle and lower order as Chudleigh collapsed. Their last seven wickets went for 21 runs – and the final four only added eight between them.
