Old Boys all-out for 10 against Exwick

ST Marychurch Old Boys must be wondering what they have let themselves in for after they were bowled out for just 10 by Exwick.

The Old Boys, largely former Babbacombe and Chelston players, joined the league this season with the aim of getting regular cricket.

Only last week former Barton player and Babbacombe captain Marcus Thompson, a player with Premier Division experience, signed on the dotted line.

Even with Thompson on board against Exwick, the Old Boys only had eight men on parade.

Roy Prentice top scored with four in the 10.2 overs the innings lasted.

Ten isn’t the lowest score in the league’s 45-year history as Bradninch 2nd XI were all-out for eight against Buckfastleigh in 1985 and Bucks were dismissed for five in a Premier 2nd XI game in 1998.

Going way back to 1976, Premier Division side Exeter St Thomas were bowled out for five at Torquay. It happens.

Exwick needed 13 balls to knock of the runs and win by nine wickets – opener Howard Rose scoring all of them.

The Old Boys did take a wicket: Martin Hudson bowling Exwick captain Kris Calderhead.

Exwick skipper Calderhead said he had some sympathy for St Marychurch and the situation they were in.

“No one likes to see a cricket club struggle like that and I hope pick up some players and get through the season,” said Calderhead.

So far the Old Boys have lost by nine wickets to Chelston and 10 wickets at Whitchurch.

Captain Sean Tucker will hope things improve this Saturday – results and numbers-wise – when he takes the Old Boys to Yelverton.

Chelston & Kingskerswell were rained off against Yelverton without a ball bowled on Saturday. They face Kenn this week.

KENN came up short on the chase at Whitchurch, who defended a hefty 263 for eight in 35 overs by the skin of their teeth.

Josh Meadows (86) and Richard Hall (52) were the leading lights in Whitchurch’s total of 263 for eight. Jack Thomas took three for 62.

Ed Bragg (49) and James Gosling (88) put on 110 for the second wicket and Falk Koeller made 50 after Gosling went, but Kenn finished short on 255 for seven. Josh Towl (4-47) took out the Kenn middle order.
