Whimple batter Braunton + Wear bounce back + May fires for Feniton

BRAUNTON were on the receiving end of some brutal hitting as Whimple raced to a nine-wicket win at Kelsey.

Jon Baglow, settlng into his new career as an opening batsman, made 81 at the top of the order as Braunton posted 181 for seven.

Former opening bowler Baglow was the dominant partner in stands that got Braunton up to 127 for four.

Rob Paterson contributed eight to a stand of 43 and Nigel Cross didn’t score a run at all while the total advanced from 56 to 90.

Callum Mitchell was next best with 23.

‘Classy,’ was how skipper Dan Brierley described Baglow’s innings.

Matt Richards with four for 38 from nine was the pick of the bowlers.

Whimple had been looking at the weather forecast and knew they had to get on with it.

Dave Culshaw went cheaply to Mick Cashmore, which unleashed Leigh Lorenzen on the Braunton bowling.

While Nathan Kidd compiled 43 not out at one end, Lorenzen fired 109 not out at the other as Whimple raced to victory in just 33.2 overs.

Brierley said it was a case of win the toss, win the match

“It is so hard to lose a toss like that knowing the rain is coming.

“Whimple turned the game on its head once they knew the rain was coming.

“The difference between us was Lorenzen, who batted very well and chanced his arm with some monster blows.”

CLYST St George lost a high-scoring thriller at Kilmington by 35 runs, which dropped them down to second in the early table.

Kilmington rattled along to 316 all out in 42 overs, led by opener Josh Short with 115.

Short was fourth man out at 202 having shared four sizeable stands, none bigger than 72 for the first wicket with Brett Garner.

Short hit 15 fours and four sixes before his time ran out.

Alex Rockett went in the next over, but there was no collapse – far from it.

Glen Harding (32) and Ben Fuzzard (68) clattered up 101 for the sixth wicket, helped by Fuzzard hitting 32 in one over. He had nine fours and five sixes, which is 66 in boundaries.

Clyst’s bowling figures were X-rated, apart from James Edworthy who had four for 16 off eight overs, three of them maidens.

Clyst certainly weren’t embarrassed when they batted as they replied with 281 for six.

No one made a century, but only Edworthy really missed out in the top six.

Opener and skipper Chris Ferro had 64 and went on to reach 143 for four. Jayakrupakar Nallala (38) chipped in.

Althugh Dan Takle (76) and Steve Bourke (54) put on 69, the clock was running down.

Takle was last man our in a Clyst total of 281 for six.

COUNTESS Wear put their opening-day defeat by Branton behind them when they routed Uplyme by 131 runs.

Opener Dave Jarvis underscored the batting effort with a patient 54 at the top of the order, batting through until 161 for four with Kav Dias (38) and Andy May (26) the main supporters.

When Jarvis went to Steve Batey (2-24), May and Parminder Singh (28no) kept the board ticking over.

Uplyme slumped to 33 for six in reply – Dias (5-23) the destroyer – and were never going to win from there.

James Whetlor (16), Rhys Davies (21) and Sam Wooster (16) offered token resistance in a ‘recovery’ to 82 for seven.

Singh (2-11) and acting captain John Bendall (2-17) whipped out the stragglers by the 23rd over.

“We looked like a useful unit,” said Bendall.

“When we batted we did it in pairs – 70 for the first wicket got us on the front foot – and we bowled in pairs too.

“After Kav went through the top five with an outstanding display of bowling, we never looked like losing.”

CLYST Hydon dipped to a six-wicket defeat against Feniton in another game interrupted by bad weather.

Hydon got to bat for the full 45 overs and made 214 for eight.

The top order all fired with opener Sinthura Thevaraj and Oz Besley setting the tome by making 31 and 22 respectively.

Clinton Lewis had 17 then Rumesh Batagodage (59) and Graham Trude (19) notched 59 for the fourth wicket.

A burst of wicket taking by Chris May (3-48) and Charlie Selley (3-40) slowed Hydon down until Will Thornton came in at the end and swished 16 not out in a hurry.

Feniton’s target came down to 167 to win in 35 overs and an unbeaten ton by May got them there with three overs to spare.

Batagodage (2-25) had the most success of any Clyst bowler.

Clyst Hydon are away to Alphington this Saturday.

ALPHINGTON captain Stuart Shaw got the result and performance he wanted in a run-rate win over Cullompton.

Cully were bowled out for 134 in the 31st of their 45 overs, spun to a turn by Paul James (5-16) and Tom Bath (3-30).

Jason Parr opened up with 42 and Prince Xavier made 22 – they put on 66 for the second wicket – but the middle order failed.

Tail-enders James Vincent (12no) and Kalaan Nessling (15) helped add 48 for the last three wickets from an unipressive 86 for seven.

Alphington made a prompt start through Luke Phillips (29) as Mark Halse (49) as Alphington reached 91 for two.,

Bath (16no) and Matt Taylor (9no) were not out when it rained after 25 overs with Alphington ahead of the clock on 117 for two.

Reviewing the game, Shaw said he was pleased with the result and how it was achieved.

“Cullompton got off to a flyer, which never really worried us as I had plenty of bowling options which always makes a big difference.

“Tom Bath and Paul James bowled extremely well once the two openers went and we kept the pressure on and bowled with great discipline to make it hard for them to score .

“Mark Halse and Luke Philips opened up and made light work of the total, which was never going to worry us on a good wicket.

“Last week’s loss against Clyst St George was very disappointing. I thought the players responded really well and showed the class we have in our team.”
