Devon have last look at bowlers in final warm-up against Somerset 2nd XI

DEVON team chief Keith Donohue is planning one last look at bowling options in Sunday’s 50-over friendly against Somerset 2nd XI at Sidmouth (11am).

Devon have lost seamer Trevor Anning from last year’s one-day side and look like starting the current season without Sidmouth pacer Zak Bess and North Devon’s Jack Popham.

Scott BarlowBess has a side strain and is unlikely to feature in the Unicorns Trophy game against Dorset at Instow on Sunday week.

Popham cracked a collar bone playing football and won’t be bowling fit for a couple of weeks.

Dan Goodey and Hugo Whitlock have been pressing their claims for a share of the new ball in the side with tidy spells in warm-up games against Hampshire and Gloucestershire 2nd XIs.

Both stay in the squad for Sunday’s game, which also includes Sidmouth’s Scott Barlow for the first time in this year’s warm-up phase.

Said Donohue: “Goodey and Whitlock have impressed in the first few games, building on what they did against Hampshire with fine spells in favourable conditions against Somerset at Tiverton.

“Scott’s availability looks like being better this year and we want to get him back in the fold.”

Missing against Somerset will be opening batsman Rob Woodman and keeper-batter Matt Thompson, who have work commitments. As the top two run getters in the one-day cup last year, averaging 49 and 54 respectively, both are already penciled onto the teamsheet for Dorset.
