In July the off spinner, who is also a useful batsman made his First Class debut for Somerset in the three-day game against Pakistan, after which he played in both the Second XI T20 and Trophy Finals.

Bess also made his maiden century for Somerset 2nd XI in their match against Gloucestershire.

Bess made his Specsavers County Championship debut against Warwickshire, in early September, taking six for 28 in the first innings and finishing with match figures of 8 for 59.

Just to show is was no flash in the pan, Bess followed up with five for 43 in the first innings of the final game against Nottinghamshire.

Bess, the former captain of cricket at Blundell’s School, Tiverton, is at home in Sidmouth for a few weeks before heading out to Australia on an ECB club placement.

Bess is the latest graduate from the Devon youth system to land a contact at Taunton, joining the Overton twins, Ben Green and Lewis Gregory on the staff.

Said Bess: “I’m really delighted to have signed for Somerset and it’s a dream come true for me to have taken 13 wickets in my first two games, both of which we won.

“I am very happy to have been offered a two-year deal to sign for Somerset and proud that all the hard work is starting to pay off.”

Matt Maynard, Somerset’s director of cricket, said: “ “Dom is a feisty character and fights for every wicket and every run.

“He has already shown just how valuable an addition he is to the side so we are delighted to have been able to sign him on a two-year contract.”
