Hagan-Burt in as Devon lose Dom Bess to England U19 duty

DEVON have made one change to their 12 for the game against Cornwall at Sidmouth starting on Sunday.

Sidmouth-based Dom Bess, who played in the defeat by Oxfordshire at Exeter last week, is on England Under-19 duty against Sri Lanka.

Jamie Stephens, 12th man against Oxfordshire, is likely to replace Bess as the off-spinner in the side.Joe Hagan-Burt

Joe Hagan-Burt comes back into the 12 having impressed in recent games for Plymouth.

Seam-bowling all-rounder Hagan-Burt is a extra option for team chief Keith Donohue to pick from when he names the final XI.

Sidmouth’s Liam Lewis has ruled himself out due to injury. He missed the defeat by Oxfordshire two weeks ago for the same reason.

Sidmouth’s Bess brothers – Zak and Josh – are both retained in the Devon squad. Luke Bess, another brother and the captain of Sidmouth, was in the team management’s thoughts after a good season at club level but didn’t make it into the final 12.

It is the last game of the season for Devon – and as Cornwall are second in the Western Division and going for the title it will be a tough one.

Cornwall have to win and hope leaders Berkshire either lose or draw with Dorset at Finchampstead.

Devon could finish bottom of the table for the second year running if they lose.

Although they are three off the bottom of the table, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire can go past them if they beat Shropshire and Cheshire respectively.

“Cornwall have been one of the top sides in all Minor Counties cricket over the past few years – one and three-day – and have a lot to play for,” said Donohue.

“If we want to get anything out of the game we will have to match the levels Cornwall are playing at over all three days.”

Three-day cricket can need as many as six new balls –which carries cost implications for the county club.

Sidmouth Town Council is a ball sponsor for the game, as are East Devon District Council and Heard & Co chartered surveyors.

Fund-raising on behalf of Sidmouth Hospicecare, dementia charity Admiral Nurses and the David Shepherd Cricket Trust will be taking place during the game.
